Returning to the covenant
Bnei Anusim: returning to the covenant
Many families in Latin America, Spain and Portugal descend from Jews who were forced to hide their faith. Today many of their descendants are returning. For a man, the brit milah is part of that return.
A return generations in the making
Some men grew up with family customs no one could explain: candles on Friday night, avoiding certain foods, a grandmother who whispered that the family was once Jewish. Others found out through research or a DNA test.
Whatever brought you here, the wish to return is something to honor. I have performed brit milah many times in Latin America, including in Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Colombia, and my own family has roots in Argentina.
How the brit fits into your path
For most Bnei Anusim, returning to Judaism is done through a rabbi and a beis din. The brit milah, or hatafas dam brit if you were already circumcised, is one step on that path. I work with the beis din directly and know the timing and paperwork that go with it. See also brit milah for conversion.
If you are not yet working with a rabbi, tell me where you are, and I can help you think about where to start.
Care, privacy and cost
An adult brit is done under local anesthesia, in a private room, with personal follow-up afterwards. I travel to where the men are, so a community can plan a date together.
Cost should never be an obstacle. Nobody is turned away over money; when needed, a sponsor covers it. In Spanish, please write to me on WhatsApp; phone calls are in English.
