The Covenant
Why Brit Milah?
The covenant of Avraham — a sign that stays with you forever.
The covenant of Avraham
Brit milah is the oldest commandment that has been kept continuously by the Jewish people. Hashem told Avraham Avinu that this sign would be “an everlasting covenant” between Him and Avraham’s descendants, for all generations (Bereishit 17). For nearly four thousand years, Jewish families have kept this covenant through exile, persecution, and every hardship, often at great personal risk.
A sign that stays with you forever
Our Sages teach that Avraham Avinu watches over his children and recognizes them by the sign of the covenant (Talmud, Eruvin 19a; Bereishit Rabbah 48). The brit is not only something done once. It is a lasting connection to Avraham, to your family, and to the Jewish people.
It is never too late
Many Jewish men never had a brit milah. Sometimes their parents were not able to arrange one, sometimes they lived far from a Jewish community, and sometimes it simply was not part of their family’s life. None of this changes who you are. A brit milah can be done at any age, and it is a meaningful step at whatever point in life you choose to take it. About adult brit milah.
Already circumcised?
If you were circumcised in a hospital or without a proper brit, the covenant can still be completed through hatafas dam bris, a brief and simple ritual that takes only a few moments.
Privacy and dignity
Every adult brit milah is arranged privately and respectfully, under local anesthesia, at a time and place that works for you. Your questions are welcome, and there is never any pressure.
